Goodness Spent: New Chapter!

mloreley:

A new chapter to my Dragon Age 2 AU fanfiction, Goodness Spent, has been posted! You can check it out here.

In this chapter, Lysandra Hawke is contemplating what to do about the end of her ‘employment’ with Athenril’s smuggling group and how to earn enough to support her family, when a chance encounter with a charismatic dwarf changes her destiny forever.

Though she has to resist socking him the jaw, at first.

Reblogging for the day crowd!

In this chapter, Evelyn Amell is determined to help the people of Darktown, no matter what. Also, the Warden-Commander of Ferelden is none too pleased with Anders’ sudden departure.

Big thanks to PersephoneChiara for letting me include her Rhiannon Cousland in this story!

Quick Awakenings Observation

persephonechiara:

cloveglee:

Anders is DELIGHTFUL. Funny, charming, personable. I get the very strong impression that they were attempting to make an Alistair personality substitute, at least at a superficial level. What the hell happened? I HATED him in DA2!

As I said in my answer, Anders is still Anders in DAII. His DAII traits are all over DAA. What happened in DAII? The merge with Justice. Which was foreshadowed in DAA. He is still the same man. With his walls breaking down. Humor no longer serves as a defense mechanism. There was no personality switch. And he was never a substitute for Alistair.

As Persephone points out, Anders is still fundamentally himself. He was just hiding all the things that made him angry the best he could while making jokes as a defense mechanism. Look at all the talks you have with him in Awakening; there are a few times he lets the mask slip, and admits how much he hates the way mages are treated. He admits to his deep anger, then brushes it off with a joke and a flirt.

When he merges with Justice, he can’t do that anymore. All of the old hatreds and things he used to be content turning away from, mattered too much to simply try to ignore. And when injustice is hurting people, killing people, you’re not going to be bright and cheerful about it.

A lot of people love the superficial, masked, humor-as-defense-mechanism Anders, and hate him when he’s letting his feelings lay bare. And that breaks my heart.

Xylene Hawke

Allow me to introduce to you my newest Hawke- Xylene!

And she’s happy to meet you:

As a mage and a smartass, she’s at odds with a lot of people, her family included.

(I love the death glare she’s giving Carver there, by the way)

And she doesn’t take shit from anybody. Especially not some pansy templar.

How long before either her smart tongue or the attitude that she knows better than everyone else gets her in trouble?

Anders: Friendship vs Rivalry (and Personal Responsibility)

impressioniste:

People often ask, ‘which is better, friendship or rivalry’? It’s a pretty common question. It’s also something that’s very difficult to address, ultimately. But I’m going to try.

Short answer: His writer says that it’s up to the player to decide.

Now, the really long answer:

Under a cut for personal opinions and length. This is approximately 8,000 words, just so people know what they’re getting themselves into if they try to sit and read it. Sorry this took so long, it was supposed to go up this morning, but it kind of… ran away with me.

This is an absolutely beautiful dissection of exactly why the rivalry path bothers me so much with Anders, especially romanced. I hate the belief that he only chooses to “change for the better” when you’re constantly tearing him down as Hawke, questioning his choices and undermining the very cause that defines his existence. He even says as much- he loves Hawke, that Hawke is the most important thing in his life, but his cause is more important than his life.

You can support someone even when you disagree with their actions. I firmly believe that Anders would listen to someone who acknowledged his feelings far sooner than someone constantly criticizing him. But if anyone treated me the way Hawke treats Anders in the Rivalry path, I would have cut ties with them ages ago.

There would be no, “I hate you but still want to fuck you!” There would be no, “I don’t know whether to kiss or kill you!” Because that’s not a healthy relationship. I actually really don’t like the way the writers handled the rivalry path for Anders, because it paints him as completely psychotic. So if you happen to agree with him or his worldview, even on a friendship path, there’s still that part of him that would be present on the rivalry path there.

One of my favorite ways of handling the Justice quest is to support him, but when he talks about the Chantry, start questioning him. There, Hawke brings out the line about “I DO love you, but loving someone doesn’t always mean agreeing with them!” I think that’s so important as to why I prefer the friendship path; you still care about him, but show that it’s not blind and that Anders isn’t above criticism in a Friendship-path Hawke’s eyes.

I would’ve liked to see a rivalry path that would have made sense for Anders to still be infatuated with Hawke, to respect Hawke while still disagreeing with them. Something that doesn’t make the bedroom scene look like a farce- going from “I would wring your NECK!!” to “I love you so much, I’m scared to lose you!”

So, definitely agreeing with impressioniste on this one. It’s a long read, but analyzes things beautifully.

Title: Dore Na (Fenris' Theme & Mage Pride) Artist: Sven'Harel 5,433 plays

Dore Na || Fenris’ Theme & Mage Pride
Arranged by Sven’Harel (Composed by Inon Zur)

I put both Fenris’ Theme and Mage Pride from the Dragon Age II soundtrack together. Title taken from a fan transcription and translation of the lyrics, found here. So apparently I test out Audacity when I get horrifically bored.

I always found it an interesting thematic choice that Inon Zur composed two ‘halves’, so to speak. These two pieces never sounded whole to me when apart. It seems like they represent the opposing sides of the mage freedom argument, using characters as juxtaposition: Fenris who despises the twisted side of magic, and Anders (I always feel like Mage Pride is his theme, or at least his purpose) who advocates for his people’s rights. Neither side is wholly correct or incorrect.

If you take away the different melodies, what lies underneath both compositions is almost the same. I like to think that these two complementary pieces are Inon Zur’s gentle reminder that everyone is fundamentally identical. We are all people.

Bioware. :c

So first, Bioware concedes to the whiners about the ME3 endings, and has agreed to give in to those demands.

Now I learn that they HAD been working on more DA2 content, including an expansion, but decided to abandon it to focus on what they’re working on.

I mean, I hope that means we’ll be getting the level of quality and love that the Mass Effect series got overall, but I’m so disappointed about their choices as of late, that I doubt it.

:c I has a Bioware Sad.

I want them to do well. I want DA3 to be an epic awesome story that everyone can love unconditionally. I just feel sad that it comes at the expense of other content. :c

Neither can she.
That’s kinda the point.
Let me clear that up; she’s a massively in-depth character, flawed and real and fantastic, for everything that she’s worth. She also likes trying to keep things simple and shallow, because when things start meaning a lot, it hurts more- either her, or other people. Which she doesn’t like. She’s wiser than she lets on, she cares about people more than she lets on, and she has problems with commitment and loyalty.
But she comes through when it counts.
